Sony BDP-S350 1080p Blu-Ray Disc Player - A Quick Review
By Troy Richards
Many reviews and critics of Blu-ray players will inevitably compare the Sony BDP-S350 with the Panasonic DMP-BD30K and though some may rate the Panasonic higher, the truth is that the Sony is a superior machine. The Sony was actually a wonderful surprise.
With a respectable start-up time when compared to the Panasonic, the Sony BDP-S350 had good response time that can be important when you want to sit down and watch a movie without the delays and waiting for the menu to appear. But more than this simple advantage, the Sony’s up-conversion ability, the ability to take a standard DVD and calculate and fill gaps in its image to create as good a picture as possible, far exceeded that of the Panasonic. In fact, the Panasonic’s up-conversion left too much to be desired and looked too much like a first-version edition. When you want to view your old DVDs in the best light and in the best quality, the Sony BDP-S350 is an excellent choice for conversion.
Another advantage the Sony has over its rival is the player’s ability to save and revert back to your last viewing point in the movie whenever you go to the menu or turn off the machine. The Panasonic simply dumps you back to the beginning of the movie when you exit the menu, although it does manage to save your place in the event of power loss or shutdown. For those individuals who sometimes like to tinker with the menu in the middle of the movie, the Sony is definitely the way to go.
There are many reviews and comparisons between these two players and in almost all of them, the Sony BDP-S350 wins every time. Beware, however, when a reviewer compares the Sony to Panasonic’s DMP-BD50K. This model is almost $300 more expensive and really not a fair assessment between the two. For the price, Sony wins hands down.
