What Is 1080p Format?

Any new technology always seems to have its own terminologies, and this is true for high definition television technology. You will likely see figures such as 720p, 720i, 1080p and 1080i.

So, what is 1080p format? The 1080p format is a way of understanding what kind of technology you are getting. The 1080p format deals with the resolution of the HDTV set.

First off, the numbers in a 1080p HDTV or a 1080i HDTV represent the total number of horizontal lines (1080 lines if that’s not clear) that the monitor can display. In essence, this makes 1080p, and 1080i to be the same.

The difference between 720p and 720i verses 1080p and 1080i is that of a huge margin. You get 360 more lines with a 1080p than a 720p. This equates to a big difference in the quality of the image. However, realize that the image can only be as good as the signal. So, if your broadcasting service only delivers images in 720, you will not get more benefits. But, use a 1080 signal, and you get the best out of a 1080p HDTV television set.
